Life – dreams = job

Life – dreams = job

I saw this copy on a plug for a TV show. I just had to write it down because it made me think.

Sure, life minus dreams equals a job. That’s what most people do. That’s what most people think they have to do to survive. That’s what most people know how to do.

Some people literally kill for the job. They work themselves to the bone so they think they can be better than everyone else in the work place. This is also where office politics come in. They need to make themselves look better than others so they get a leg up. Never mind that they might not even like the job to begin with, anything to get ahead of the pack.

Sadder than compromising dreams for a job is not having dreams to begin with. What do you want to be when you grow up? We often ask kids this question. The usual answers are doctor, lawyer, occasionally teacher because they see teachers in their everyday. But oftentimes, these ambitions are influences of parents who want their children to be something. This something is a better situation than the parents’ everyday reality.

On the other hand, pursuing one’s dreams without the safety net of a day job is considered as frivolous. Normally, one does not do that, not have a day job, to pursue one’s dreams. It’s simply crazy. And yet, when done, it can be the best feeling in the world that no amount of job security can buy.

  • ah! math :) i hate math, but its logic is inexorable. To me, this is interesting:

    If this is true:
    Life – Dreams = Job

    Then this must also be true:

    Life = Dreams + Job

    Interpretation: Our lives are filled with many things, all of which can be placed into two bins: Chasing after things we don’t have and Doing the things we have to do. In life, we must have both things .

    or more poetically: If dreams =0, then Life = JOB — boring!
    If job=0, then Life = Dreams — not real!

    I think this is just half the mystery of life. They real key is to maximize Life, don’t view it as a constraint (like above). In other words, Its an algebraic identity, the left hand side is just the sum of the right hand side. The idea is to increase dreams per given Job — i.e. get a job that makes dreaming easier. Or increase Job per Dream (make ur dreams or other’s dreams come true). Or both! Whatever you think is best for you. Optimize.

    that is all :) peace out [i always wanted to say that...]

  • By the way, the TV show that ad was for is “Eureka”. It’s a scifi series about a small town that’s populated by supergeniuses. Check it out. (Also known as: “A Town Called Eureka.”)

  • Eureka sounds interesting.
