Indy Jones still rocks (even with the crystal skull)

Was able to catch the showing of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” on its first day. We had seats in the theater’s front row but no matter, it was still rowdy fun.

Granted, Harrison Ford is older. But by god, he still rocks. The lines on his face only add to his sexiness and his credibility.

The whole time I was watching, I felt like I was on the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, the one where you get on the jeep and bounce back and forth in the darkness encountering all sorts of scary but ultimately fun stuff. That ride was one of my favorites. I did not mind lining up for the first time, or the second, or the third…

Cate Blanchett’s character was just so-so, with the weird accent and the attachment to her rapier. Shia LeBeouf’s character was predictably the long-lost son that Indy didn’t know he had. And Karen Allen’s character deservedly did get her man at the end.

Ha! They shot at Yale! I didn’t know before I saw the movie but while I was watching the chase scene, I thought to myself, “This rather looks familiar.” And true enough, they shot at New Haven. Apparently, Ford’s son is a student at the university.

The ant scene was disgustingly priceless. Death by ants, I tell you! The stunts were freakingly awesome. Harrison Ford is 60 something and he could still do most of the stunts? Wow, just wow. And I just sounded like a simpering colegiala with the choice of words. Pardon my English, my brain just came from a vacation wherein I met up with good, good friends

Though I liked the movie overall, and felt like they did a great job of coming up with the sets and the visual, I had an issue with the alien concept. Couldn’t they have thought of something else more ancient perhaps? The aliens were a little out of place and were a little too far-out for comfort. Why didn’t they just dig up an ancient civilization, even if it had been done before? Or something historical? It would have made the movie more enjoyable for my viewing pleasure as compared to the aliens with see-thru skulls.

Also, IMDB has a list of factual errors found in the movie here. I didn’t really notice them when I was watching but hey, some people did.

  • Hi, Amee! I’m with you on most of your comments re: Indy Jones 4. I was disappointed that, rather than imparting his legacy to an up-and-coming archaeologist with a few adventures and digs under his belt, Indy would choose to pass the torch on to a teenager with an unnatural attachment to his comb and ducktail ‘do. As a Gen X-er who considers Indy and Marion my childhood heroes, that was such a let-down.

Loved loved loved seeing Marion again, although I thought the ending was a little too crowd-pleasing for my taste. I’m glad to see that they ended up together, but it seemed too forced and a little out of character for the series.

The opening was interesting, but nothing like the really big opening sequences of the first two flicks. I didn’t care much for “Temple of Doom,” but you can’t beat Willie Scott bursting through the screen in her red sequin dress as the opening credits roll and then busting into a Chinese rendition of “Anything Goes.”

Still, it was lovely to see the two main leads again, and if nothing else, the nostalgia factor ran HIGH, especially during those times when they played Indy’s march and Marion’s love theme.

    Cheers,
    Marjorie
