I rather liked the movie, “Miss Potter.” In a way, she reminded me of me, only with published books that have defied time and more money. Hee hee.
She defied social conventions by choosing her own path in life and marrying at the ripe old age of 40. She preserved the countryside she so loved by buying up the land with her own money and making these working farmlands. It is only my hope that someday, I will end up like Beatrix. No, I don’t want a dead fiance. But I like what she made out of her life because she refused to compromise and be held back by what society dictates and what others say.
I read Peter Rabbit ages ago. When I read it, I know I didn’t find anything weird about a bunny wearing a blue jacket with brass buttons. If I did, I would have remembered.
I saw the original illustrations of first edition Potter books at the Huntington Library in California. That library had the most awesome collection of old and rare books and manuscripts of all the museums I’ve had the chance to visit. They had rare editions of the bible and a lot of the classics. I didn’t actually want to leave when I visited a few times, but alas, the real world beckoned.
Beatrix, she defied my expectations of a cutesy children’s book author. On second thought, children’s book authors are quite the bothered and stubborn lot, think Lewis Carol. It’s funny how I have found out that I am starting to have a thing for classic British women writers.
