Two shows I’m currently crazy about: Chuck and Damages.
Chuck is just geekily funny. I didn’t appreciate it before when I used to catch it on NBC. I actually thought it was lame. But I’m watching episodes now and I’m hooked on the show. Maybe because Chuck is earnest and is uncannily the geek next door. Maybe because they spoof things so well. Maybe because the cast of characters are just plain hilarious. I don’t know what it is exactly but they’ve got my vote.
Damages, on the other hand, is addicting. I gave the first episode a chance, since it was right after House on AXN. Theme music was cool. The initial premise piques your curiousity. Why was she running down the road, bloodied? Then they tell the story from the end working its way to the beginning of the story without being boring or stupid. And Glenn Close’s character, Patty Hewes is jus plain evil. Brilliant good but evil. Or is she?

I love “Chuck,” too. Reminds me a bit of “40-Year Old Virgin” (what with the location) but the other elements are also fun. Always a big Adam Baldwin fan, especially after Firefly.

@Gabby: Even “28 Weeks Later?”

@Dom: You didn’t like 28 weeks? Definitely 28 days later it is not (28 days later says something important about the nature of monsters, and that in desperate situations, we (British Military) can all turn into monsters), but its got its own thematic logic.
28 weeks later is about a father’s guilt and how that guilt ultimately re-animates the infection and turns people (the US military/the dad) into monsters. Rose Byrne’s character is a straight nanny role, alot of ‘get down!’ or ‘follow me!’ dialogue. You can always find this kind of person in horror movies, and typically they die. This isn’t a meaty role, but she’s cute
Some good rose byrne movies: I capture the castle (really Romola Garai’s movie) and TwoHands (really Heath Ledger’s first big movie). A big US movie that has Rose in a major part is Wicker Park. Its not so good (its got plot holes you can drive a truck through), but she’s the best thing there.
