Can’t wait for the Wimbledon finals. I’ve been staying up late these past few days to watch the lead-up. Last night was Rafa Nadal vs Schuettler. Their final plays were especially entertaining since they played a lot of volleys. Rainer Schuettler’s marathon match with Arnaud Clement probably wore him off
Haven’t seen any of Federrer’s matches but I know that they were probably awesome.
I watched their finals at Roland Garros on TV where Nadal handily beat Federrer on clay like he always does. Will he be able to do the same on grass? I’d like Nadal to win!
As for the women’s finals, I wasn’t excited about a Williams finals. I wanted Jie Zheng to beat Serena but Zheng struggled a whole lot during the match. If she got her groove on earlier, it would have maybe helped. But her fairy tale run has alrady been enough to inspire. Before Wimbledon, she wasn’t known as a singles player but she defied the odds to reach the semi-finals.
Some interesting trivia about Venus and Serena Williams:
- Both are from California. Their dad coaches them. Wimbledon.com reports that their dad has already left for the U.S. because he said his job is already done, with both daughters facing off for the finals.
-
Venus won Wimbledon in 2005 as the lowest-ranked player ever at 14 and two years later she shattered her own record by winning again as a 31st ranked entry who had been elevated to the dizzy heights of 23rd seed because she had shown she has form on grass. So she became the lowest-ranked women’s winner in Wimbledon history.
-
It will also mark the ninth time the two have contested a singles final, with Serena leading 6-2. In fact the 28-year-old Venus generally has a thin time of it against her younger sister, who is 26. She has not defeated Serena in a Grand Slam final since their very first at the US Open in 2001.
- This is Venus’ seventh Wimbledon final in nine years
- Third Williams final in seven years
- Both will also compete for the women’s doubles as a team, the match to be held the day after their singles event. So in effect, they are each other’s worst enemy?
Serena might probably win again, as odds are in her favor. But with sisters, one never knows.
Now, if only I will get to watch a final court side at least once in my life.
In other news, hotdog eating contest on ESPN. They say it’s been around since World War I? It’s funny how seriously they discuss how to eat hotdogs faster.
