I’m tired. Really tired. But despite the tiredness, I somehow managed to find the energy to stand up from bed and cook. What I made tonight? Ground beef with string beans. Since I attempted to make dulce gatas last night, but the product was not as firm as I wanted it to be (heavenly, nonetheless), I also experimented with cooking the condensed milk over low flame. The result? Good, although not aesthetically pretty.
But what I cooked isn’t what I want to write about. I want to write about Mad Men. I finished two seasons of the series. And I must say, I can’t wait for Season 3.
Amazing. All of them have their own neurosis.
Don Draper is a stud who seems to have everything. The perfect job. Good looks. The perfect wife and kids. But he’s got a really bad past, which seems to be affecting him psychologically that he himself is screwing up (literally and figuratively) his present. Maybe because his mom was whore? Maybe because his dad died a tragic death? Maybe because he was orphaned? He serially cheats on his wife and sleeps with women, it’s almost a compulsion.
His wife Elizabeth is no better. She seems to have everything as well. She’s well provided for, has nice clothes. Is pretty. But she’s profoundly sad, as one character repeatedly tells her at the stables. In the end, she wants to have control of her life back and sends Don away. Problem is, she finds out she’s pregnant.
Joan is also interesting. She seems to have it all. But does she? And the fact that she allows her fiance to rape her and still be with him (or will she leave?) adds another dimension to her character.
Pete’s transition as a cocky, confident account exec who eventually shows loyalty to Don albeit in a sneaky way makes the series interesting.
I’m saving Peggy Olson for last. She’s my favorite. I like her quiet demeanor that masks her ambition and her hidden desires. Elisabeth Moss plays her character pretty well. I like the fact that she’s plain, but smart and talented. And in a man’s world, she tries to assert herself but not in a bitchy sort of way.
Anyhoo, that’s all folks. More next time.
